The most magical Summer nights in the city of Barcelona are the Summer Nights at la Pedrera: a unique experience with live jazz on the roof terrace while contemplating one of the most spectacular views in Barcelona.
Summer nights includes a free visit to the Espai Gaudí, a visual tour of the work of the unique architect, followed by a drink on the terrace, an emblematic, evocative place that invites you to experience the architecture, the night, the city and the music.
Since pre-Roman times, the arrival of the summer solstice has been a motive for celebration. We mark this astronomical phenomenon by lighting magical bonfires that “give strength to the sun” in its path towards the winter solstice and to keep away the spirits that come out in the shortest night of the year.
In Catalonia, the first day of summer (23rd June) coincides with the Festival of Sant Joan. La Revetlla de Sant Joan, also known as la Nit de les Bruixes (Night of Witches) or la Nit del Foc (Night of Fire) is a popular and magical celebration that evokes ancient festivals that honored the sun.
Night of Fire (Nit del Foc): In modern times, we celebrate parties and participate in festivals around a bonfire to commemorate the arrival of summer. The festival fills the night with light, color and sound, thanks to fireworks and firecrackers that children and adults launch incessantly into the magical and mysterious sky. La Coca de Sant Joan, a traditional Catalan pastry, can be found on every table.
Night of Witches (Nit de Bruixes): It is said that on the Night of Sant Joan, witches and druids (Akelarre) gather all over the region to strengthen and develop their magical and extraordinary powers. At these gatherings, the witches distribute their elixirs and love potions. According to popular legend, the angel of love comes out this night only, striking people into love with his bow and arrow.
This is, without question, a night of mystery and mysticism. Don’t miss this magical night!
Sant Jordi (St. George) is the patron saint of Catalonia, whose feast is celebrated on April 23.
This day is customary in Catalonia that men give a red rose to women, and women a book to men.
So they say that the day of Sant Jordi is the day of love for the Catalans, as both a gift as a token of his love is made.
Today the tradition is so widespread among people who not only love those gifts are made, parents also tend to give a rose to their daughters or even their mothers.
This custom comes from the beautiful legend of Sant Jordi. Then we tell you so you understand why this tradition began.
International Book day
Every April 23 the streets of Catalonia are filled with little shops of flowers and books.
It is customary among the locals stroll along streets such as La Rambla and Rambla de Catalunya to buy the book and the rose that day.
Because of this custom, the day of Sant Jordi was declared World Book Day by UNESCO in 1996.
The historical explanation is that one day April 23 Shakespeare and Cervantes died, there has been declared International Day of the Book.
Legend of Saint Jordi
Legend tells us that there was a dragon that frightened the small town of Montblanc, located in the south of Catalonia.
To avoid his fierce attacks, he gave a young girl every day, which was chosen by a popular draw. Until one day, the slaughter weight fell on the princess, who was given to the beast.
When he was about to be devoured, appeared Sant Jordi, a brave knight who fought against the dragon and won, stabbing his sword into the heart and rescuing a beautiful princess.
Then, the blood that flowed Dragon Heart, was born a red rose. Hence the tradition of giving a red rose to women, the tradition of the book came later ... some believe that the princess wrote a love poem to the knight.
